There are many obstacles that can prevent us from embracing and truly experiencing the forgiveness that God offers through His Son Jesus Christ.  The next few posts will take a look at some of the common lies that keep us from receiving God’s incredible gift of forgiveness.

The first obstacle that can prevent us from experiencing God’s forgiveness is thinking:

It is easy to think that our past sins are somehow beyond God’s promise of forgiveness.  We may feel unworthy of God’s forgiveness, which will result in us believing that we are unforgiveable.  On the surface, that seems like a somewhat righteous response, because we should never minimize the seriousness of our sin.

But the first thing we must realize is that God never forgives anyone because they are WORTHY of His forgiveness!  It is absolutely TRUE that we are unworthy of His forgiveness – we can’t earn it, buy it or steal it.  God is willing to forgive us because of His love, His grace and His mercy.  He forgives because of who HE is, not because of who we are or what we have done.  PRAISE GOD FOR THAT!!!

When we get caught thinking that our sins are unforgiveable, what we are really saying is that Jesus’ death on the cross was NOT sufficient to cover our sin!  His sacrifice wasn’t enough to pay the debt we owe.  That glorifies our sin, because we are believing that our sin is somehow more powerful than God’s grace.  If our sin is an exception to the promises of God’s forgiveness, then Scripture is lying!  Can you see Satan’s hand in that despicable lie?

The truth is that our sin is no worse, and no better, than anyone else’s sin.  ALL sin is evil in God’s sight.  But He offers forgiveness and salvation because of His love, grace and mercy.

Acts 2:21  But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.

Romans 10:13  For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”

I love how God repeats Himself on the really important stuff!!!

Hebrews 4:16  So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.  There will will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

God Himself provided the solution, and it is available to anyone willing to believe and trust Him.

Colossians 1:19-23a  For God in all His fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through Him God reconciled everything to Himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.  This includes you who were once far away from God.  You were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts and actions.  Yet now He has reconciled you to Himself through the death of Christ in His physical body.  As a result, He has brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault. But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it.  Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.

Jesus’ death on the cross is MORE than enough to pay the penalty for our sin – a WORTHY sacrifice.

Hebrews 7;24-25  But because Jesus lives forever, His priesthood lasts forever. Therefore He is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through Him.  He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.

No sin is beyond God’s ability to forgive, except one.

Luke 12:10  Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is basically to reject the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.  Being unwilling to repent of sin and ask God for forgiveness.  Denying Jesus Christ as the Son of God and hardening your heart against God and choosing to live without His presence in your life.  That leads to ultimate rejection of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, rejecting His gift of eternal life, which results is eternal separation from Him.
