God WANTS us to experience the conviction of the Holy Spirit, because conviction is a GOOD thing!  It is critical for spiritual growth, and a very necessary part of the process for us to see our sin and seek God’s forgiveness.

God wants us to see and recognize our guilt and acknowledge it for what it is – sin against a Holy, Perfect and Just God.  But He does NOT want us to sit and wallow in our guilt, throwing a pity party.

2 Peter 3:9b  He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

God did not create us with the ability to bear the burden of our guilt.  The physical response of pain motivates us to seek a solution.  If I put my hand on a hot stove, the pain motivates me to pull it off immediately to try and protect my hand from permanent damage.  The physical, mental and emotional affects of guilt should cause us to seek a solution.  Otherwise, guilt will eventually destroy us.

God wants us to come to Him with our guilt, confess our sin to Him, repent and receive His forgiveness.  Repentance is NOT just being sorry about the consequences of our sin.  It is NOT being sorry we got caught.  It is NOT being sorry for the impacts our sin has on us and the mess it makes of our life.

True repentance is being deeply, genuinely sorrowful about the sin itself.  Understanding that we have offended a HOLY God.  Understanding that we have grieved God’s heart with our disobedience and rebellion against Him.  Repentance is a deep desire to turn away from our sin and NEVER do it again.

YOU know, and GOD knows, if you are truly repentant.  Or if you are not.

When we do truly, sincerely repent, God does something extraordinary.  God Himself provides the way to deal with our guilt AND our debt.  When we confess our sin to Him, He promises to forgive us, restore us, and cleanse us from sin.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2 Corinthians 5:21  For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Romans 3:22  We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Jesus was completely innocent.  He did not commit ANY sins, so He had no debt to pay.  Jesus died a sacrificial death on the cross and He offers to pay the debt WE owe for the sins WE have committed.

First of all, we have to believe that this is true – that God is SERIOUS about His offer of forgiveness.  It sounds too good to be true… but it IS true!  The God of the Bible is the only God who offers to FORGIVE the guilty instead of CONDEMNING them!  That is why the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Good News!

We must learn to accept God’s offer of forgiveness and leave our guilt at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ.  The pain, shame and disgrace of our guilt should motivate us to see the true freedom that Jesus offers.

John 8:34  Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.”

There is no better picture of the slavery of sin than addiction.

John 8:36  So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

The only way to escape the shame, disgrace, regret and guilt of sin is by receiving God’s forgiveness.
