God designed us to be “in step” with Him.  That is when we will be the happiest, the most fulfilled, and the most secure.  My “ministry dog” Tillie does a great job of illustrating being in step with me in the video clip that goes with this post.

This is the second post in the Obedience study.  In case you missed part 1:

Obedience – Why Does it Matter  Part 1

In the Beginning – Creation

God spoke, and this world and everything in it came into existence (Genesis 1-2).

Genesis 1:26-31  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”   So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.   Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”   And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.   Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.   Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.  So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

God’s creation worked perfectly, exactly as He designed it to work.  There was no sin in the world, which means there was no disease, no decay, no suffering, no pain, and no death.  It is a world we can’t even imagine.

God created mankind completely unique from all the rest of His creation.  Man is created in the image of God.

Isaiah 64:8  But now, O LORD, You are our Father, we are the clay, and You are our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand.

Each of us has been sculpted by God’s hand.  Made in His image, for His purposes.  Some of the implications of being made in God’s image are:

  • We have intelligence and the ability to reason
  • We have understanding of morality (right and wrong) that is INSIDE us
  • We have the capacity and the capability to know God
  • We have a built in desire, a hunger, to know God, whether we realize that or not
    • God created us to enjoy His love and be in relationship with Him
    • We find the only source of joy, blessing, peace and satisfaction for our soul when we are in a right relationship with God
  • We have a desire to be in fellowship with others
  • We have value, because God creates each of us with a purpose (HIS purpose, not our purpose)

Because we are made in God’s image, we will be the happiest when we are walking “in step” with our Master.  There will be trials and some things will be hard, but our Master will ultimately reward our obedience.

In this video of Tillie, you will notice she verbalizes (barks, growls, etc.) quite a bit.  That is because of her breeding (herding dogs are typically pretty “talkative”) and her personality.  In general, the more she talks, the more she likes what she is doing.

Again, I encourage you to reflect on your walk with Jesus Christ as you watch this video.  Watch how Tillie keeps her focus on me.  She waits to see what I will ask her to do next, and is eager and enthusiastic to do it.  She even gets ahead of me a time or two, trying to anticipate what I’m going to ask her to do next.  And she is happy when she knows I am pleased.

Oh that my own walk with Jesus Christ could be as obedient as this!!!
